Movie 1. Illusory motion in the absence of a transient onset. Ramping contrast up slowly reveals a long-lasting component of illusory motion that does not depend on abrupt onset. To see this effect, maintain fixation (away from the RAP) and look for motion to continue after full contrast is reached. (Note that nonlinearity in the display device can lead to illusory motion in either direction during the 1 sec while contrast is ramped up; try to ignore this motion if it is present.)
